June 20-24

Prep Time – Sunday

  • Students will arrive in North Bay and check in at their accommodations.
  • Students are recommended to make prior arrangements to stay at The Chancellor’s House, a residence on the campus of Nipissing University, in order to have convenient and affordable access to all aspects of the OWES course and its various activities.

Day 1 – Monday

  • 7:30 – 8:00 Arrival (light breakfast provided)
  • 8:00 – 9:00 (OWES Coordinator and Instructors) Welcome, Introductions, Field Safety & Bear Safety
  • 9:00 – 9:30 Wetland boundaries
  • 9:30 – 9:45 Break
  • 9:45 – 10:30 Wetland Types, Wetland Site Types, Vegetation Forms & Communities
  • 10:30 – 11:00 Wetland Complexes
  • 11:15 – 12:00 Wetland Complexes
  • 11:00 – 11:45 Box Lunch (provided on the bus)
  • 11:45 – 4:30 (All) Cache Bay field trip
  • 4:30 – 5:15 Return bus travel
  • 5:15 – 5:30 Clean up
  • 5:30 – 6:30 Dinner provided
  • 6:30 – 7:30 Wetland Plants and Soils (optional)

Day 2 – Tuesday

  • 7:30 – 8:00 (light breakfast provided)
  • 8:00 – 8:45 Overview of Day & Highview Wetland Imagery
  • 8:45 – 2:00 (All) Highview Wetland field visit by bus transportation; box lunch (provided in the field)
  • 2:00 – 2:30 Return bus travel and clean-up
  • 2:30 – 3:30 Introduction to GIS and Digital Imagery Interpretation
  • 3:30 – 3:45 Break
  • 3:45 – 4:15 More Digital Imagery
  • 4:15 – 4:30 Break
  • 4:30 – 5:00 Social Component
  • 5:00 – 6:15 Special Features Component
  • 6:30 – A free evening

Day 3 – Wednesday

  • 7:30 – 8:00 (light breakfast provided)
  • 8:00 – 9:00 Hydrological Component
  • 9:00 – 9:15 Break
  • 9:15 – 10:30 Hydrological Component
  • 10:30 – 11:00 Bus travel
  • 11:00 – 1:00 (All) Field trip to Oak Ridge Wetland; box lunch provided in the field
  • 1:00 – 1:3Return bus travel
  • 1:30 – 2:3Biological Component
  • 2:30 3:30 (All) Explanation of the XX Lake Group Exercise.
  • 3:30 – 6:30 GIS Lab and classroom open
  • 6:30 – A free evening

Day 4 – Thursday

  • 7:30 – 8:00 (light breakfast provided)
  • 8:30 – 9:00 Bus travel to XX Lake
  • 9:00 – 4:00 The XX Lake site is open
    • In the field, everyone must wear a safety vest. Be careful on the XX Lake floating mat. Please inform Instructors in case of injury or if you hear an approaching thunderstorm (Box lunches are provided)
  • 2:00 – First bus leaves from the field site and goes back to campus
  • 2:00 Vans leave from the field site as needed
  • 4:00 – Second bus, with the last of the students, leaves from the field site
  • 4:30 – 6:00 The GIS Lab and Classroom are open
  • 6:00 – 7:30 (Students are free to pursue their own dinners)
  • 7:30 – 10:00 The GIS Lab and Classroom are open

Day 5 – Friday

  • 7:30 – 8:00 (light breakfast provided)
  • 8:00 – 11:00 Group evaluation of XX Lake continued
    • Classroom opens at 8:00 am
    • GIS lab is open 8:00 – 11:00 am
  • Group wetland scores to be submitted by 11:00 am SHARP!!!
  • 11:00 – 12:00 Lunch (provided)
  • 12:00 – 2:00 Open book test
  • 2:00 – 2:30 Break
  • 2:30 – 3:30 Student presentations
  • 3:30 – 4:30 Instructor presentations
  • 4:30 – 5:00 Conclusions … then people depart
